In today's post, I'd like to tell you about this new gadget we have just got for our son. It's called a Snuza Hero, or if you find one made before the recent name change, a Snuza Halo, and it's a baby movement monitor. We got it in anticipation of when we move the little guy into his own room.
Basically, the Snuza Hero is this little battery powered gizmo that clips onto your baby's diaper, and it senses normal breathing movements in your child as he or she sleeps. It doesn't have any cords or wires, or additional sensor pads, and since it's clipped right to the diaper, it detects movement in your baby far more accurately. It's very small and totally portable, so you can use it wherever your baby sleeps. It's also the only type of movement monitor you can use on your baby while they sleep in your bed.

When it's attached to your baby's diaper, the soft rubber movement sensor is in contact with your baby's abdomen. If it doesn't detect any movement from your baby for a period of 15 seconds, the Hero will gently vibrate to rouse your baby. If during the night, your baby stops moving for 15 seconds and is then roused by the vibration of the Hero, the Movement Indicator light on the unit will be red in the morning to indicate this. If the Snuza Hero has to vibrate and rouse your baby on 3 separate occasions, the Rouse Warning alerts you to the fact that your baby's movements have stopped for 15 seconds on three occasions.
If the Snuza doesn't detect any further movement for another 5 seconds after a vibration, an alarm sounds to alert you to take immediate action to wake your baby. The alarm sounds at 85dB at 10cm, so it's pretty hard to miss it.
My wife chose this particular type of baby movement monitor after researching it and talking about it with a group of other new mums. The only other type we were thinking about is called the Angel Care monitor, which is a pad monitor that goes under the mattress in your baby's bed. Plenty of people are happy with this kind of unit, we decided against it though after hearing about people experiencing false alarms when their baby rolls off the actual pad while they are asleep in their beds, even though they're perfectly fine. I'd like to avoid those particular heart attacks if I can! Also, this type of unit is really only usable in the baby's bed, while the Snuza Hero can be used anywhere since its attached to the baby's diaper.
We already have a Video/Audio monitor so we can keep an eye on our son while he's asleep in the other room, but the Snuza Hero gives us both a little added peace of mind when we're asleep too. I just hope I never have to hear that alarm for real!
Here are a couple of pictures of what the Snuza Hero looks like (I know one says Halo, it's an old image from Amazon before the name change). Also, my wife demonstrates the test sequence when you first turn it on, which also shows how it works in action. Sorry about the background noise, our little one doesn't quite understand he's meant to keep quiet when Daddy calls "Action!"......

If you'd like to find out more about the Snuza Hero you can check out the company website at www.snuza.com, or you can also find it on Amazon.
If anyone is also using this type of baby movement monitor and has any comments about it, or any other type of monitor they'd like to tell us about, please leave a comment below, we'd love to hear from you.
Stay tuned,
~ Ryan
